Age is predictable old thing; learn abilities throughout your formative years, and then slowly lose them again as certain aspects of your mind and body slow down.
As a former mate in the Royal Navy, Merchant Navy, and shipbuilder, my grandfather used to build model boats from scratch as his hobby, and after visiting him yesterday he expressed his wishes to regain some of the abilities he once had so he could build models again. I remember as a kid watching him steam bend plywood over a piece of drilled pipe with a wallpaper stripper attached to it. These boats floated, ran, turned with aplomb, had the worst wireless range known to early 90's electronics, and were the best things ever.
FFWD to now, and the old bones aren’t what they used to be, but the spark of the mind is still there and going strong, so I decided for his birthday to shun the traditional bottle of shipyard-grade whiskey and kick him off with some basic level 1 Airfix kits to get his eye in, hopefully leading him back down the path of model building (bespoke or otherwise).
I know he’ll feel incapable when he sees these kits, and I know they’re not boats, but I’m banking on the nostalgia of WWII and the Hurricanes and Spits flying overhead the ships in the bays of England to rekindle that desire to build. Of course, my offer of unlimited help is written in the card as well, and a sworn promise to get him onto at least level 3 kits by next year :)

Excellent choice. Paint included but no pre-coloring, everything needed to get them set together and on a shelf looking sharp.

A bit late now! It’ll be starting that will be the problem, once he’s set on a task he’ll complete, and painting is his forté.
